I’m about to nerd out here so bear with me.
It’s been over a week since the announcement that Comic Con Africa will be coming to South Africa and I am beyond excited. If you’ve seen my bucket list you would know that at number 48 and 49 I have Comic Con and Cosplaying as an experience I would like to do. So, I’m going to be killing two birds with one stone 😊
I’ve been dreaming about Comic Con for a very long time. San Diego or New York are the dream but now I get to experience this in South Africa and by the actual San Diego and New York creators.
The first thing I did after hearing the news (apart from screaming) was call up a friend at work to discuss COSPLAYING, and we unashamedly spent 2 hours discussing who we would be dressing up as. After much deliberation I have narrowed the list down to 4 character options:
|1. Misty Knight
2. RiRi Williams
|3. Yoruichi Shihōin
4. Neliel Espada
In the search of the perfect character for cosplay I met RiRi Williams. When I first saw Riri I was excited not only because she looks super cool but because she looked like this, like me.
The setting of these comics is after the Infinity War (In theatres May 4 – Watch Trailer). At first, I was intrigued by the young black female super genius and as I read the comics I fell in love with her and the setting. Riri Williams is funny, quirky and you can’t help but fall in love with her.
She lives in a time that doesn’t limit what anyone can do especially young black females and to me that completely and utterly won me over because of what I do with GirlCode (this is what we are working towards). This was another great moment for me after seeing Shuri in Black Panther at theatres last week.
The pop culture is currently getting so much publicity with great comic books being made into amazing movies. Hopefully this rise will increase the number of people reading actual comic books just like The Invincible Iron Man: Riri Williams is IronHeart, I would recommend this comic.
Who will you be dressed as this coming September?
