2016 has been an interesting year for most people and I’m no exception. There has been so much turmoil in the media that has affected our happiness scale. We have gone through almost being downgraded to junk in South Africa, Trump winning the election in the USA and the death of some beloved celebrities (Prince, George Michael, Alan Rickman, Mandoza and Carrie Fisher just to mention a few)
With all the negativity happening externally I decided to take account of my year. I want to see all the good that has happened to me this year and reflect on those great achievements as I gear myself up for 2017.
I took the Sid Savara approach of conducting my year-end review. The approach helps me look at 2016 through three different lenses:
- My Accomplishments
- What I Learnt
- How I Felt
After the three reviews it helps you focus on What Next in your life helping start the process of setting your 2017 goals.
If someone has asked me before doing this review how my year went I would have most likely said it was the worst year to date. I have now come to realise that it was mostly due to the way I felt because my accomplishments and learnings during 2016 were so much.
In this blog I have just mentioned a few items per area:
- My accomplishments:
- Purchasing and moving into my first apartment
- The opportunity to speak at Forbes Leading Women Summit and bring publicity to GirlCode
- New Job and career progression.
- Started a new blog
- My Lessons
- I am stronger than I thought I was, I am independent and am able to stand on my own two feet.
- My fear of public speaking is nothing to be feared. Even though I am working on this it was great to learn that I can overcome it.
- I have been going through life aimlessly until some point this year when I made a conscious decision to decide on what I want from life and work towards that.
- I hate drinking. Yes, in all the serious discussions I realised this year that drinking is not for me. The taste and the way it makes you feel is not something I would like to repeat anytime soon or maybe ever.
- How I Felt
- I believe that most of the year I felt overwhelmed by life itself that I made some of the challenges larger than they were. This in turn made 2016 seem worse than it was, being internally focused on my emotions brought about a lot of disappointment and pain.
Looking back at 2016 I would say it wasn’t the worst year and I feel I have learned a lot about myself and what I want from life (just a little bit). As I close 2016 I start with setting goals for 2017 and hoping for a good year.
