LOVE has been the inspiration for art and literature for thousands of years. It should come to no surprise that reading romance novels is a favourite pastime for a lot us. The romance novel industry has plenty of genres to accommodate everyone who leans towards reading novels about love.
I believe classic romance novels are those novels that have stood the test of time, the type of novels that your English teacher makes you read in class. I got my first taste of classic romance novels high school English class with the OH so popular Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
This classic romance novel is a true classic not only because it was such a great read but because it still stands the test of time. Every couple of years Hollywood makes a Romeo and Juliet movie, every generation has their own Romeo and Juliet movie to relate to. This all comes from one book written centuries ago that has stood the test of time.
In my 25 years I have seen 3 Romeo and Juliet movie annotations of the books and loved them all. Although I did love Leo more than the others.
I had already fallen in love with romance novels when I was introduced to the classic romance novels. I had read Winter’s Heat and was in love with that type of writing (historical romance) so Shakespeare to me was someone I couldn’t understand (I mean who spoke like that). The next Shakespeare we read at school was Hamlet which to be honest did not help cement my relationship with classic romance novels but when I read A Midsummers Night’s Dream I was in love all over again the way I had been when I first read Winter’s Heat.
A Midsummers Night’s Dream was my first love in the classic romance novels genre. After this Shakespeare experience I had to have more. So like a normal teenage girl I went in search of Shakespeare to read. The other William Shakespeare classic romance novels I found that still stick with me till today has to be Twelfth Nights.
Twelfth Night is also a big favourite of mine and I feel it has earned its stripes to be considered a classic romance novel or a Classic in general.
After a while I started moving away from Shakespeare and onto other classics like Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights. Most people get their first taste at romance through classic romance novels and sometimes they don’t even know it.
What was your first taste of classic romance novels and which one of the novels is your favourite. Share in the comments below.
