BRANDED is a new adult dystopian book set in a world where sinners are branded by the 7 deadly sins. When you have been accused, there is no justice, no “innocent until proven guilty”. If you are accused you are branded and placed into The Hole to live out your life.
When I started reading BRANDED I was hooked all the way till the end. There were parts I loved so much they had me all giddy but there were parts that I didn’t like so much.
Let me start from the beginning…
“I have been accused they have come to arrest me…”
Lexi has been accused and in the world where an accusation is as good as being found guilty she is taken away to a ‘prison’ which they call The Hole where you are branded by the sin you have been accused of.
The seven deadly sins
Lust – blue
Gluttony – orange
Greed – yellow
Sloth – black
Wrath – red
Envy – green
Pride – purple
Lexi I felt started off weak, on the verge of suicide and then being in the whole and being dependant on the hero, who in this case is her guard, Cole. (And yes she had a personal guard in prison). You can see the potential though, the fire inside her that has been constantly put out by life. Watching grow to realise her strength is wonderful you almost want to SCREAM with joy.
Lexi and Cole spend a lot of time together and at first it was just a job for Cole but as time goes by they start to fall for each other.
“I never planned on falling for you. You were just an assignment. But it just sort of happened and now… There’s not a single thing I would change about you. When you smile, my entire world stops. All I see is you. I need you.”
I completely ugly cried at that moment, looking completely idiotic to the world.
He loved her and she loved him and that’s all that mattered right? WRONG – If they get caught they will get killed. Love between a guard and a sinner in the Hole is forbidden. They will be tortured and killed – forbidden love- , which makes their love so much sweeter. We always want what we shouldn’t have.
In the world of ugly where an evil Commander rules the Hole. His word is law and nothing can be done. The world is dark and twisted and some scenes had we crying due to the ugliness of some characters, but Albi and Missy somehow found a way to show the beauty in all the ugliness through the love of family, friends and most importantly the love of Lexi and Cole. #Colexi
I really loved this book but there were times at the end when I completely couldn’t stand Lexi. I felt like as soon as her long lost brother is back in the picture she couldn’t care less for Cole. I COULDN’T stand her obnoxious brother Keegan. He drew on my last nerve every time he opened his big mouth. As she got stronger I felt like her love for Cole was being forced. I would sit at night and hate on her so badly telling myself she wasn’t good enough for Cole, wishing her brother harm.
Despite my irritation towards the end the authors had me crying like a little girl. I forgot my little dislikes and realised I loved the characters so much.
Take note that romance is not the main focus in this book but it’s really worth reading. The emotions you feel at the simplest of actions will give you Goosebumps.
