Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away.

Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy that takes over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact. But Wanderer, the invading "soul" who occupies Melanie's body, finds its former tenant refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

As Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of Jared, a human who lives in hiding, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she's never met. Soon Wanderer and Melanie-reluctant allies-set off to search for the man they both love.

An alien invasion has taken over the earth. The aliens better known as ‘Souls’ takes over the human body and leave the human unconscious. After a while the human, mostly the young, tend to disappear leaving the Soul alone in the Hosts body.

The book begins with the implantation of a Soul into a young girl named Melanie Stryder who was one of a few survivors of the alien invasion. In a raid Melanie is captured and Wanderer (the alien) is implanted into her. Wanderer is an old Soul who has lived countless lives and know how the process of invasion works but is surprised when entered into Melanie’s body and yet Melanie was still there and would not leave.

This being an unusual case Wanderer is confused but tries to live her normal life of peace on Earth but Melanie would not have it. Melanie’s memories of the man she loved/loves – Jared – (who is super-hot by the way) constantly comes to Melanie in her dreams and her body feels the loss and pain of being away from him. Sharing one body makes it very hard for Wanderer to ignore Melanie, for what she feels Melanie feels and vice versa. After a while Wanderer cannot stand the separation and sets off to the desert to find Jared and Melanie’s brother, Jamie, who she has also grown to love.

After a near death experience her arrival at the base where most humans reside was not accepted with open arms because all the humans (including Jared) could see was Wanderer. In their minds Melanie was dead. The decision for Wanderer/Melanie to be killed was stopped by Melanie’s uncle Jeb who was curious as to why the alien would risk it’s live by coming to the humans.

Until this point it had been Melanie against Wanderer and her trying to manipulate Wanderer to do what she wanted but when she saw the hatred in the humans (mostly Jared’s eyes) and felt the fear within Wanderer (as they share the shame body) she realised that she had grown fond of Wanderer and wanted to protect her from them. When they hit Wanderer physically, she would crawl into herself and Melanie would take charge of the body. It wasn’t about control anymore but protection as Wanderer has never experienced such hatred and violence in her life.

After a while people got used to having Wanderer/Melanie in the area but they still kept her locked up. When two brothers (Ian and Kyle) tried to come and kill Wanderer/Melanie Jared protected them and during the fight as the brothers were hurting Jared Melanie/Wanderer jumped in to protect Jared which gave doubt to Ian on what the aliens where like. The doubt made him curious and the answers he found through curiosity made him fall in love with Wanderer.

With a twisted love triangle building between Ian, Wanderer/Melanie and Jared things within the human resistance starts to change. With the full acceptance of Wanderer/Melanie the humans started to realise that Melanie was actually with Wanderer. After this realisation people would address Wanderer as Melanie and they would forget or choose not to acknowledge Wanderer.

Wanderer in all this chaos started developing feelings for Ian as well but the body that belonged to Melanie was already in love with Jared, therefore Wanderers feelings for Ian could not be fully shown.

After a traumatic experience of Wanderer coming across the hospital room she witnesses the murder of one of the Souls. The human resistance have not given up the fight against the Souls to get their world back. A distraught and grief stricken Wanderer makes a decision to show the resident human doctor how he can remove the Soul out of the Hosts body without injuring either of them. Wanderer/Melanie, Jared and Ian go on a run to collect supplies and food for the group, because the Souls have a trusting nature and do not expect deception the process is easy enough for Wanderer (who is a Soul) to do. When they return back to the humans Wanderer show the doctor the process that should be taken and makes them promise to place all the removed Souls back on the ship leaving earth. The first Host they remove the Soul from the human returns and takes over. Everyone is astonished and happy, but Melanie realises that this is betrayal in Wanderers eyes. Melanie can see that all this is hurting Wanderer but can do nothing to help the issue.

Wanderer and Melanie are friends at this point and Wanderer has to make the toughest decision yet. Worse than betraying her kind. She has to give Melanie back to them but she doesn’t want to get on a ship and live somewhere else, she loves them all (mostly Ian). She tells the doctor to bury her instead of releasing her. She has found home and does not want to leave but she doesn’t want to take over someones life either.

I love The Host. I think I have read this book 5 times since I bought it a couple of years back. Stephanie Meyers outdone herself here. This is not a typical romance book it’s twisted and shows courage from all characters. You cannot help but fall in love with Ian, Jared, Melanie and Wanderer. You cry for them and hope for the best. This book does conjure a lot of emotions from you. I recommend this book to everyone, it’s beautifully written and a lot of has humour.
